Sawgrass Mills mall to remain closed Thursday because of flooding

Sunrise outlet mall closed until further notice

SUNRISE, Fla. – The Sawgrass Mills mall will remain closed Thursday because of flooding.

"Due to area flooding, Sawgrass Mills will remain closed at this time," the outlet mall said on its official Twitter page. "We will continue to assess the situation and update regularly."

The parking lot of the Sawgrass Mills mall remained flooded Thursday morning.

"Sawgrass Mills received another inch-and-a-half of rain overnight, which erased the water recession gains of (Wednesday)," mall spokeswoman Jennifer Valdes said. "The Sawgrass area has received 15 inches of rain in the last three days and 10 inches were within 24 hours."

Valdes said data from the National Weather Service shows that the amount of rainfall was more than any named storm, with the exception of Hurricane Irene in 2005.

The mall closed Wednesday because of intense flooding from all the recent rainfall.

"It's like a pool," a would-be shopper told Local 10 News. "All of the parking lot is like a pool."

Some shoppers made the trek across the flooding to the Target next to the mall, which remained open Thursday.

"We called Target. I just wanted a bagel," Taylor Ginsberg said while laughing.

Taylor and Aly Ginsberg said part of their home is flooded.

"We have major cabin fever. Our garage is flooded," Aly Ginsberg said. "We live right there, but our garage is flooded, so we just walked over."

Valdes said Sawgrass Mills will continue to provide updates on its Twitter account and on the shopping telephone number at 954-846-2350.

Nearby in Plantation Acres, neighborhood roads still look like rivers.

"We've been here since 1990, been through all of the hurricanes, Andrew the other big one, never seen water like this, ever," Carol Wilson said.

Nearby canals that were overwhelmed with the rainfall have spilled over, leaving knee-high water for neighbors to contend with.

But with the rain finally stopped, at least temporarily, on Thursday. Some people, like Olga Dutton, were finally able to make it outside for the first time in days.

"It doesn't stop pouring. Today's the first break we've had, the first," Dutton said.

Sunrise police advised drivers to use extreme caution when navigating through flooded areas.
