Federal, local authorities investigate threats made against Miami-Dade, Broward schools

Threats deemed to be 'less than credible'

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Federal, state and local law enforcement agencies are investigating threats made against public schools in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

According to school officials, the threats have been deemed "less than credible."

They said threats have been made to other school districts as well in several Florida counties.

"That's scary. That's scary if there's a threat," said Linda Bonhomme, who was picking up her niece from school on Thursday.

But school officials were quick to assure parents that they shouldn't worry about their children coming to school despite the threats.

"Parents are reminded that schools are one of the safest places to be," Miami-Dade County Public School officials said in an email to parents. "As part of our regular protocols, we have school safety teams in place at all our schools. Schools will be following regular dismissal procedures and dismissal times."

Broward County Public Schools spokeswoman Tracy Clark said its students are also following their regular schedules, and dismissal times and procedures have not changed.

Some parents told Local 10 News that they hadn't heard about the threats until Thursday afternoon when they picked their children up from school.

"I picked her up today a little early because of the rain. I didn't want her to get wet," Bonhomme said. "So now knowing this, I'm glad I picked her up early."

The FBI investigated a different series of threats last year made against Miami-Dade School Board members via email.

Investigators determined that the threats were a hoax.

District officials said they are being extra vigilant around campuses out of an abundance of caution.
