Ballas calls Hough's critique 'hypocritical'

'Dancing' alum's comments to professional dancer a bit harsh

LOS ANGELES – Ouch!

Julianne Hough, an alum of "Dancing With The Stars," returned to the ballroom Monday night as a guest judge for week three of season 17 with a harsh critique for childhood friend and professional dancer, Mark Ballas.

Ballas just finished performing the foxtrot with celebrity partner and singer Christina Milian that Hough was not too impressed with.

"There were moments where I felt like choreography-wise, I felt like it was two people dancing side-by-side rather than together," Hough said. "So I really want to see [Milian] shine. I've danced with Mark. You have to stand in front to make sure you're seen."

There was an awkward silence that followed.  Ballas appeared to be slighted on camera but kept his silence until after the show aired.

Ballas told Us Weekly, "The one comment for me that was a little funny is that I make it all about me... all the critiques were at me, and not at [Milian]. So I thought that was a little hypocritical comment," he told Us. "I think [Hough] was very insightful tonight though and gave great tips on lines and how to express. We've had a lot of guest judges and I thought out of all of them she was one of the best. So that part, I love. I was the one who kind of got the heat, but you know what, that's OK! It's fine."

Hough, who is the sister of professional dancer and Emmy winner Derek Hough, left after season 8 of the show to pursue a film career.  She and Derek have known Ballas since they trained with Ballas' parents in London as children.

Ballas and Milian earned a 24 out of 30 for their foxtrot.

In the end, actress Valerie Harper was eliminated from the competition.
