Boca Raton teen Alan Koolik advances in 'Jeopardy'

17-year-old wins $31,001 during Thursday's teen tournament competition

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. ā€“ A Boca Raton teenager was victorious on Thursday night's episode of "Jeopardy."

Alan Koolik, a 17-year-old rising senior at the Pine Crest School, won $31,001 in the teen tournament edition and advances to the semifinals next week.

Living in Florida might have been an advantage when it came to the sports category.

Among the answers to which Koolik gave the correct response involved a professional football team from the Sunshine State.

"They're the southeastern NFL team whose logo is seen here," host Alex Trebek said as the team's logo, which was modified last year, flashed on the screen.

"Who are the Jacksonville Jaguars," Koolik correctly replied.

Koolik was tied with fellow contestant Ananya Nrusimha until the Final Jeopardy round.

The winning question-and-answer combination came in the category of novel words.

"This word for a person without certain abilities has made it from the realm of fantasy to the OED," or Old English Dictionary, Trebek told the contestants.

Nrusimha wrote, "What is powerless?"

She must not be a fan of the Harry Potter book series.

Koolik wrote, "What is a muggle?"

He'll now compete for the $75,000 grand prize Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. on Local 10.
