Final section of Dania Beach roller coaster demolished

Last piece of Dania Beach Hurricane comes down Friday

DANIA BEACH, Fla. – The final section of an old wooden roller coaster in Dania Beach has come down.

A construction crew demolished the last remaining section of the Dania Beach Hurricane, which was torn down to make way for a new shopping center called Dania Pointe.

Demolition of the roller coaster, which closed in 2011, began in March.

The Dania Beach Hurricane opened in 2000 and was billed as the "largest wooden roller coaster in Florida." It served as a landmark for commuters on Interstate 95.

Local 10 News reporter Todd Tongen was one of the first to ride the coaster shortly before it opened. He took Local 10 News viewers along for the ride.

Kimco Realty is developing the 102-acre site east of I-95 near Stirling Road.
