Pitbull releases Visit Florida contract after lawmaker sues over 'Sexy Beaches'

State pays Pitbull $1 million to promote Florida tourism, contract says

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. ā€“ Pitbull released his contract with Visit Florida Thursday via Twitter after a Florida lawmaker sued his production company to find out how much the singer's song, "Sexy Beaches," is costing the state.

"It's been an honor to represent Miami and the Sunshine State," Pitbull tweeted. "I've taken Miami and Florida worldwide -- WAY before any contract, and will do so way after. I love my home state. When asked to take on a New Year's show, I INSISTED it be live from Florida. #LOVEFL Since birth ā€¦ and till the day I die. Dale!"

Florida House Speaker Richard Corcoran filed the lawsuit against PDR Productions, demanding last year's contract between Pitbull and the state's tourism department be made public.

The contract called for Pitbull to promote Florida with his song "Sexy Beaches" and feature the state's beaches in the song's video.

According to the contract, Pitbull was to be paid no more than $1 million for promoting Florida tourism through the song, video and social media, by using the hashtag #LoveFL.

"It is unfortunate that it took litigation to lift the veil of secrecy on this particular contract," Concoran said in a statement.Ā  "This was a long unnecessary journey through claims of trade secrets, threats of prosecution, and corporate welfare paid for by taxpayers.Ā

"The people's House will not hesitate to use every tool at our disposal to protect the taxpayer and ensure transparency is the rule and not the exception in state government.Ā  It is my hope that the coverage this issue received will foster a larger discussion of the proper role of government in the free market and the need to end the idea that government as 'venture capitalist' is goodĀ for our economy."

Pitbull's company initially said the amount he was paid is a trade secret, exempt from the state public records law.

Corcoran said the lawsuit is not about Pitbull, but government entities using tax dollars irresponsibly.
