St. Patrick's Day parties: Miami Beach scene

SoBe scene has dive bar beer, snobby cocktails and hipsters' mixologists

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – There has been plenty of Irish on the SoBe scene. But when it comes to bars obsessed with tavern food and beer there are only a few that have survived the ever changing party scene.

Amid the nightclubs of Washington Avenue, the most popular Dublin-inspired dive bar with big-screens and a pool table is the Playwright Irish Pub & Restaurant, 1265 Washington Ave. With 95 reviews, Yelp users gave it 3.5 stars out of five.

A few blocks away from Playwright, on the crowded touristy Art Deco strip, is Finnegan's Way, 1344 Ocean Dr. The busy sports bar has an outside patio deck that overlooks the park.

On the Lincoln Road Mall, there is another bar on Michigan Avenue named after Finnegans Wake, the novel by Irish author James Joyce. And about two blocks away, near Alton Road is the 10-year-old The Abbey Brewing Company, 1115 16th St.

The secret spot for locals has developed a reputation for having a remarkable selection of house recipes. It remains open until 5 a.m. every day and serves four signature beers -- the amber "Immaculate IPA," the deep black "Father Theodore's Stout," the light brown "Brother Dan's Double," and the strong "Brother Aaron's Quadruple."

'SNOBBY' COCKTAILS

If what you want is a more sophisticated plethora of Irish dishes and cocktails, Miami.com and the Miami New Times recommend The Shelborne Wyndham Grand South Beach, 1801 Collins Ave. Irish whiskey cocktails will be served at the Drawing Room Bar & Lounge until 10 p.m.

For those with a sweet tooth, Serendipity 3, 1102 Lincoln Rd., created the "Shamrockdipity" martini. Some of the ingredients include Creme De Minth, Godiva White Chocolate Liqueur and Baileys. Ask the bartender about the green "Patrick's Potion" with Midori Sour, vodka and orange juice.

Other "Over 21" desserts at Serendipity 3 include the $14 "Frrrozen Girl Scout Cookie" with vanilia vodka and white chocolate, the $11 "Guinness Sout Flout,"  and the $11 "Sin City Frrrozen Hot Chocolate" with Kaluha, Grand Marnier and vodka whipped cream.

HIPSTERS' MIXOLOGISTS

For the lovers of mixology, Radio Bar, 814 1st St., is the place to be. Instead of their regular "Tiki Tuesday," on Tuesday night they will be hosting the "Irish or Not You're in Luck" event with $5 Jameson Punch Cocktails and $5 Jameson Irish Whiskey shots.

The snack bar menu has delicious "Media Noche Sliders" and "Spicy BBQ Pig Sandwich." Radio Bar's dozens of beer selections vary from $7 draft to the $21 bottled "Victory Twelve 750 ML" from Pennsylvania.

The delicious $12 cocktails include the "Soul Remedy" with Beefeater London Dry Gin, strawberry, lavender, lemon and Charged H2O. And the "My Milkshake is Better Than Yours" has Remy Martin VSOP, Licor 43, raisins, nutmeg, vanilla and a cage free egg.
