School makes the grade despite violent environment, records show

MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – As of Feb.  13, 2015, there were 2060 students enrolled at Miami Southridge Senior High, 19355 SW 114 Ave., in Miami-Dade's South Miami Heights neighborhood.

The school was the top 7th on fights among Miami-Dade County public schools and in Florida.

The top 10 schools with the most fights reported were in high-crime areas. The likelihood of becoming a crime victim in South Miami Heights was 1 in 20, records show.

The top 10 schools with the most fights reported had a majority of students who were getting free or reduced price lunch. About 63 percent of students qualified at Miami Southridge Senior High, according to a ProPublica analysis.

Despite the challenges, the school earned an "A" grade during the 2012-2013 school year and a "B" during the 2013-2014 school year, according to Miami-Dade County.
