Man shot to death while mowing yard in Miami Gardens

Shooter's car involved in nearby collision

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – A 26-year-old man was shot to death Wednesday while mowing the front yard of his Miami Gardens home.

Romeo Hibbert, 26, was struck by nearly a dozen bullets in the drive-by shooting outside the home near Northwest 185th Street and 17th Court.

"He died in the midst of his youth," his mother, Georgina Smith, told Local 10 News.

Smith said she was at work Wednesday afternoon when police called to tell her that her son was dead.

She said he had a troubled past and used to deal drugs, but he was getting his life back on track and looking to go to college.

"My son was no saint, but he didn't rob. He didn't rape," Smith said.

Smith is now preparing to bury her only son after washing the blood off the driveway.

Witnesses said the shooter or shooters were in a red car that collided with another car nearby. Inside that white car was a mother and her baby, but witnesses said they didn't appear to be injured.

Police haven't released any information or named any suspects in the shooting.

Meanwhile, Smith has a message for the shooter.

"You're a coward," she repeated.
