Police say suspect opened fire at officers

MIAMI – One suspect is dead and another in custody after a police-involved shooting on New Year's Eve in Miami.

The shooting occurred near Northwest Sixth Avenue and Northwest 68th Street.

Miami police said the shooting involved an officer from another jurisdiction.

Earlier in the day, a white Nissan Altima was believed to have been the getaway vehicle in the robbery of a Western Union in Miami-Dade County.

The car's license plate led police to a home in Miramar.

Police went to the home, but nobody was there. As police were leaving, they spotted the car and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver of the car led officers on a chase that ended in Miami.

"The individuals attempted to flee from the vehicle," Miramar police spokeswoman Tania Rues said. "At that point in time, they fired at our officers."

Rues said at least one officer, possibly two, returned gunfire.

Police believe the suspects may have thrown something out of the car at the Golden Glades interchange as they headed south.

Sky 10 was above the scene as a body was covered by a yellow tarp.

A woman at the scene arrived and could be heard screaming, "They killed my brother."
