1 man killed, 2 women injured in wrong-way crash on Florida's Turnpike

2 women taken to hospital in critical condition

LAUDERHILL, Fla. – A man was killed Thursday morning in a wrong-way crash on Florida's Turnpike, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A witness told troopers that a Ford F-150 was driving south in the northbound lanes of the turnpike just before 5 a.m. when the driver lost control.

The witness said the truck turned around on the highway, causing the truck to roll over.

"I see two headlights coming on oncoming traffic...," the witness, who did not want to be identified, said. "Next thing you know it, ... it flipped about six or seven times."

Troopers said three people were thrown from the truck.

The witness told Local 10 News reporter Ben Kennedy that he immediately pulled over to try to help them.

"I went over to the driver's side and the truck was still running," he said.

Troopers said a man, identified as Daniel Laguna, 47, of Coconut Creek, died and two women, who appeared to be passengers in the truck, were injured. Both women were taken to Broward Health Medical Center in critical condition.

All but one northbound lane of the turnpike were closed about a mile north of Sunrise Boulevard during the investigation. All lanes have since reopened.

Troopers are now working to find out what route the driver took to get onto the turnpike in the wrong direction.

"We're not sure who the driver was at the time, so that's what our investigation is going to deal with," Sgt. John Baker said. "Was there possible alcohol involved? More than likely."

The women injured in the crash were identified as Greysi Yajaira Flores Bonilla, 26, of Durham, North Carolina, and Yokairi Paredes Diaz, 35, of Raleigh, North Carolina.

According to an FHP report, none of the victims was wearing their seat belt and both women had been drinking before the crash.

Toxicology tests are pending for Laguna.
