Boys, ages 10, 17, shot in Miami

Both victims taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical but stable condition

MIAMI – Two boys were shot while playing outside their homes Tuesday in Miami.

The shooting happened about noon outside a home in the 5700 block of Northwest Fifth Avenue.

Ekari Fussell, 10, and James Leake, 17, were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center with gunshot wounds.

"I just was in my house and I just heard some gun shots and my kid was shot," LaTonya Fussell, Ekari's mother, told Local 10 News.

Miami police said the gunman got out of a car and went inside a nearby home. When he came out, he pulled out a gun and opened fire at the children.

The children scattered to avoid the gunshots, but Fussell and Leake were wounded.

"It's real hard because, about a year ago, his oldest brother was shot … and is now paralyzed, so it's like, this is just too much," Stephanie Symonette, Fussell's aunt, told Local 10.

Fussell's brother made the difficult journey to visit him at the hospital.

Leake's mother, who didn't want to show her face, called for an end to the violence.

"The violence really needs to stop," she told Local 10.

Both victims were listed in critical but stable condition.

The gunman remains at large.
