15-year-old boy kills driver with stolen car in Boca Raton, police say

2 assailants steal Ford Mustang from valet; stolen car slams into SUV, killing driver

BOCA RATON, Fla. – A 15-year-old boy with a lengthy criminal history killed a driver when he crashed a stolen car into a sport utility vehicle in Boca Raton, police said.

The fatal crash happened late Sunday night at Palmetto Park Road and Northwest Second Avenue.

Boca Raton police said Mathew Wilson was working as a valet at The Addison when two armed assailants approached him and ordered him to the ground. While one of the assailants demanded Wilson's belongings, including his keys and cellphone, the second assailant took the keys to a 2016 Ford Mustang from the valet stand.

The assailants then drove off in the stolen Mustang, police said.

Detectives tracked Wilson's phone to Deerfield Beach, where it had been tossed into a grassy area.

Shortly before 11:30 p.m., a Boca Raton police officer spotted the stolen Mustang on Northwest Second Avenue, so the officer began to follow it and called for backup. Before officers could initiate a traffic stop, the Mustang sped off and slammed into a silver Honda Pilot that was traveling east on Palmetto Park Road. The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene.

"This is someone just driving down the road at night, minding their own business," Boca Raton Police Chief Dan Alexander said at a news conference Monday.

Police said the driver of the stolen Mustang has been arrested six times since January. A passenger was identified as Jacquan Strowbridge, who ran from the stolen car but was caught a short time later, police said.
