2 killed, 2 injured in mass shooting

Body of Carlos Zuniga found at home

MIAMI – Two people were killed and two others were injured in a mass shooting at a home in southwest Miami-Dade County.

"It's very tragic what happened in that house," said neighbor Xavier Cal.

The Zuniga family lived in the 2600 block of SW 24th Street in southwest Miami-Dade for 20 years, according to neighbors.

"Those people never had any problems. They were very decent people," said Cal. "It's very sad, very sad, unbelievable that this happened."

Police say there was a mass shooting inside the home where the body of 45-year-old Carlos Zuniga was found.

Cal said Zuniga shot his wife, 14-year-old daughter, and 11-year-old son before committing suicide.

"The last shot that he fired was one that he took to himself," he added. "The wife was laying outside on the grass next to the sidewalk, and the daughter was brought out by a police officer, (he) dragged her out."

Cal said he heard at least four gunshots.

The three people were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.

An 11-year-old boy sharing Zuniga's last name died at the hospital, according to the medical examiner's office. Police confirmed Thursday afternoon the boy was Zuniga's son.

The 14-year-old girl and her mother are reportedly in critical condition. Each was shot multiple times, rescue crews say.

Cal said Carlos Zuniga owned a hot air balloon business. Local 10 was unable to find any businesses under his name.

"They were very successful," he said.
