2 men threaten to kill baby during armed robbery at Miami store, police say

Gunmen get away with register tray, envelopes containing money

MIAMI – Police are searching for two men who they said robbed a store clerk in Miami at gunpoint and threatened to kill her baby boy.

The robbery was reported just before 1 p.m. Tuesday at Christiana Grocery, 4322 NW Second Ave.

According to detectives, the gunmen waited at the register to purchase a bag of chips, but as the clerk was about to ring up the item, one of the men pointed a handgun at the woman and her infant son.

Police said the man told the clerk to place her son in the chair next to her. He then pointed the gun at the baby and yelled to the clerk, 'Give me everything you got or I'll shoot him."

"I think they're savages. You don't do that to a child," store owner Aubrey Watson said.

Police said the clerk feared for her life and the life of her son, so she handed the men the money from the cash register.

Watson said the clerk and the baby are his cousins and were the only ones working inside the store when he left to go to lunch.

"A child that can't even walk, talk or speak. The mother's obvious instinct is to protect her child, so she did what they wanted," Watson said.

According to police, the gunmen got away with the register tray and several envelopes that contained money.

Police said the men ordered the woman to the floor before they ran off. The mother and baby were not injured.

"They're lucky I wasn't there because they wouldn't have gotten anything except a hard time," Watson said.

Anyone with information about the thieves' identities is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
