MIAMI – Four boys are now on home detention in their parents' custody after causing a scare at Brownsville Middle School.
"I'm going to release you on home detention. You are allowed to be at school or home, and that's it," said Judge Angelica Zayas.
Police and K-9s were called to the campus Wednesday after someone reported there were guns at the school.
The arrest forms show a loaded .45-caliber gun was found in the waistband of a 13-year-old. The other gun -- an unloaded .25-caliber weapon -- was allegedly brought in by a 12-year-old and passed around to two other 15-year-old classmates. It was eventually found inside one of their backpacks.
"I was just scared. I don't like being around guns," one student said.
Friday's hearing attracted community activists who said they want to keep these kids accountable but also want to see the root causes of their actions addressed.
"They're just kids. They belong at home and at school. Not in jail," said Ruth Jeannoel, of Power U Center.
The boys spent the last two days behind bars. Each of them appeared in court Friday and were able to go home soon after.
