73-year-old man shot, killed in Little Havana

Police searching for gunman

MIAMI ā€“ Police are searching for the person who shot and killed a 73-year-old man in Miami's Little Havana neighborhood over the weekend.

The shooting was reported about 7 a.m. Sunday in the area of Southwest Fifth Avenue and Third Street.

Police said the victim, Omelio Fontaine, was shot in the chest and taken by paramedics to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Circumstances leading up to the shooting were not immediately known, but police are reviewing surveillance video captured from a school across the street from Fontaine's apartment.

"The only thing you can see is a couple of females walking down the street, a vehicle leaving the scene around the time that the shooting happened, and that's the only thing you can see in the video," an IT technician said.

Neighbors told Local 10 News that they didn't hear anything coming from Fontaine's third-floor apartment or outside, and only found out that he had been shot once police arrived.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
