8 Cuban migrants intercepted off Key Biscayne

Male migrants found on small boat by U.S. Coast Guard

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. – The U.S. Coast Guard intercepted a small boat carrying eight Cuban migrants off the coast of Key Biscayne.

Sky 10 was above the scene just before 2:30 p.m. Wednesday as the migrants were placed on a Coast Guard boat.

Coast Guard officials said all the migrants were males and appeared to be in good condition, although a few were dehydrated. They were given life jackets, food, water and basic medical care.

The migrants were transferred to a Coast Guard cutter and are expected to be repatriated to Cuba.

Just this past weekend, the Coast Guard intercepted another makeshift boat that was carrying 17 Cuban migrants south of Key West.

Those migrants were repatriated Wednesday, along with 52 others whom the Coast Guard had taken into custody in recent weeks.

Officials said more than 4,000 Cuban migrants have been intercepted at sea so far this fiscal year, (from Oct. 1, 2014 to Sept. 30, 2015) and more than 2,000 were intercepted last fiscal year.
