911 calls released in deputy-involved shooting

Deputies shot, killed Jermane McBean on July 31

OAKLAND PARK, Fla. – The Broward Sheriff's Office on Thursday released 911 calls made the day of a fatal deputy-involved shooting in Oakland Park.

On July 31, deputies shot and killed 33-year-old Jermaine McBean. Callers reported seeing him carrying a rifle that deputies later discovered was a Winchester Model 1000 Air Rifle, which resembles a hunting rifle.

"I'm on Dixie Highway just north of Commercial Boulevard. There's a guy walking around carrying a rifle," said one caller. "When you see someone walking around with a rifle nowadays, you gotta call it in, right?"

The deputy who shot McBean was placed on administrative assignment per department policy.
