MIAMI – A suspicious bag found at Miami International Airport just before 6 a.m. on Thursday prompted the bomb squad to report to checkpoint 3 in concourse D in the American Airlines terminal.
Passengers were redirected to another checkpoint for security screenings.
At 7:30 a.m., the Miami-Dade Police Dept. Bomb unit gave the all clear, saying the concourse was safe. The area re-opened and was fully functional.
According to investigators, a passenger was attempting to pass through the security checkpoint when the inspector detected a small item that had the appearance of a grenade. It was later determined that the item was a cigarette lighter with the outside covering of a small grenade.
No one was arrested.
