MIRAMAR, Fla. – Miramar Police are looking for the driver of a car that hit and killed a 6-year-old boy Wednesday night and then drove off.
"It was just heartbreaking," said Monique Batchelor, Deandre Binns' mother. "He was just hungry. All I wanted to do was just feed him."
Batchelor said she and her family had eaten dinner at the McDonald's in the 6200 block of Miramar Parkway about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. As they crossed the street, a white sedan hit Binns, who was walking behind a relative, said police.
Detectives told Local 10's Christina Vazquez they reviewed hours of surveillance video from area businesses to find the driver. However, the images were grainy and the driver remains unidentified, police said.
"They hit a 6-year-old child and keep going," said Jermaine Binns, the boy's father. "This is pain. My body is numb. I don't feel anything. I still don't believe he died."
Witnesses told detectives the driver swerved twice with Binns on the hood of the car before running him over and then taking off.
The boy was taken to Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, where he died.
Binns recalled the last conversation he had with his 6-year-old son.
"'I love you.' 'I am busy. I am watching Dora. I will talk to you later.' And I said 'Okay, son,'" he said.
Investigators believe the car may have been a Dodge Charger with tinted windows and chrome rims. It likely has front-end damage.
"Deandre meant the world to me. He was going be the shining star. He knew everything," said Batchelor. "Please, please come forward. It's really, really, really heartbreaking."
"It's very hard. [I] lost my son 2000 in a car accident and then my grandson," said Shirley Adams, Binns' grandmother. "Why would someone so wicked hit a baby and run. Could they just turn themselves in? Oh God, turn yourself in."
"He looked just like me," said Jayjay Binns, Deandre's brother. "We used to play video games together. We used to sit around, relax and play with each other."
