Holiday display bothers neighbors

Neighbors worry Hyatt home in Plantation is hazardous

PLANTATION, Fla. – Some people living in a Plantation neighborhood are worried that one home's big holiday display has become hazardous.

The Hyatt home has become a holiday tradition for families in South Florida. Local 10 viewers named it the top holiday home last year.

"On any given night, there might be 5, 6, 700 cars coming through," said Adam Fractenberg. "What I always tell people is -- it's great for everyone else except for those of us that live on this block."

Neighbors on the cul-de-sac worry the display may have become a hazard.

"People aren't looking at where they are going. They are looking at the display," said Fractenberg. "So you combine that traffic on this tiny block with eight houses and kids that are running back and forth, excited to go in, I'm concerned that it's a safety hazard and a problem waiting to happen."

"I'm not looking to allow the few to really affect what the many really enjoy every single year," said Mark Hyatt.

Hyatt said he has volunteers directing traffic and a radio station warning visitors to drive slowly. He added that it is a holiday tradition.

"It goes back to when I was 5 years old," said Hyatt.

"Really, this has become something that's unregulated and due to the volume of people on any given night, needs to be," said Fractenberg.

Neighbors have asked the city to intervene, but the mayor's office said it is a private home and the family can decorate it as they wish as long as they don't violate code ordinances.
