Man doused in gasoline, set on fire remains critical

Victim's aunt pleads for witnesses to come forward

MIAMI – Molita Spaulding handed out flyers at a U-Gas station off NW 47th Street and 27th Avenue Thursday to help track down witnesses of an attack against her nephew.

"We are doing the best we can do right now," Spaulding told Local 10's Ben Kennedy. "Just hoping and praying somebody saw something,"

Detectives say late Christmas night, Darrell Brackett ran out of gas and went to the U-Gas nearby station to fill up a can. That's when the 44-year-old got into some sort of a fight with three men.

The group doused Brackett in gasoline, set him on fire and took off.

"He is severely burned on 75 percent of his body. Right now he is in a medically induced coma," Spaulding said.

A woman who witnessed the sudden attack put out the flames. She is the one Brackett's family wants to find.

"If he was a part of their family, they would want somebody to help them. So, were looking for the same," said Brackett's cousin, Joseph Russell.

Brackett remains in critical condition.
