Man indicted in 1994 death of ex-wife

Woman's body never found

MIAMI – The ex-husband of a woman who disappeared seventeen years ago has been indicted with first-degree murder in her death.

Lynn Friend, then 35, disappeared on Aug. 28, 1994, not long after winning a child custody battle with her ex-husband, Clifford Friend. State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle's office said Clifford Friend had vowed to stop his ex-wife's planned move out of state with their son.

Prosecutors said U.S. Customs officers spotted Clifford Friend and another person were seen in a boat off Haulover Beach, apparently dropping a large package from a boat.

Four searches were conducted in the water, even using a naval sonar vessel with sophisticated equipment, but Lynn Friend's body has never been found.

"With the passage of time, my prosecutors and these dedicated law enforcement officers have been able to develop the additional evidence which allowed us to bring this case before the Grand Jury," Fernandez Rundle said in a statement Wednesday.

Grand jury proceedings are confidential. The nature of the "additional evidence" is unclear.
