Man says HOA allowing him to fly 9-11 flag

Association threatened legal action over flag

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – A retired New York City police officer who was facing fines over a flag commemorating those who died on 9-11 will be allowed to keep his flags flying.

Richard Wentz was told last week that he had 10 days to take down the 9-11 flag or face fines and possible legal action. The flag lists the names of everyone who died on Sept. 11, 2001, and is a replica of flags placed in Battery Park during the 10th anniversary of the attacks.

Wentz, who helped save people from Tower 1 of the World Trade Center and lost 43 friends and colleagues that day, said he received a letter from his homeowners' association saying the flag detracted from the aesthetic harmony of the surrounding properties.

The association said residents are allowed to fly only one flag each.

Wentz told Local 10 on Monday that he will now be allowed to fly the commemorative flag, as well as an American flag.
