Miami Police chief says little on investigation

Officers reportedly under investigation for involvement in sports gambling operation

MIAMI ā€“ The Miami Police chief offered little information Wednesday on a reported FBI investigation into a group of officers involvement in a sports gambling operation in Liberty City.

The Miami Herald reported Tuesday a source with knowledge of the investigation said one officer has been suspended and as many as six could be arrested pending the outcome of the investigation.

The officers were reportedly protecting a sports gambling operation. According to the newspaper, "Surveillance, in an unincorporated area of Liberty City, led to the spotting of a Miami officer who allegedly showed up regularly to protect the illicit business."

Miami Police Chief Manuel Orosa, while at a news conference announcing 16 indictments on drug charges, said little about it to Local 10 Senior Political reporter Michael Putney.

"As a matter of policy, I do not comment on any ongoing investigations whether they exist or not, because, as you can understand, it can impede," said Orosa. "If there is an investigation and you guys put it out there, it can impede whatever we're doing, and that's why I really don't want to say anything about what's going on, if anything's going on

The FBI issued a statement to Local 10, saying "The FBI does not confirm or deny the existence of investigations."
