Miami police chase ends in Martin County

Suspect surrenders after chase along the I-95

MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. – A police chase that started in Miami ended hours later in an armed standoff in Martin County.

The Martin County Sheriff's Office says the chase began near Miami when Samal Hammond, who was having an argument with a woman, had a shoot out with police. It's unclear who fired first, but that's when, he reportedly took off.

WPBF reports the chase went north on the I-95 until deputies were able to put down stop sticks, that got the suspect to pull over near Kanner Highway.

Deputies say Hammond barricaded himself in the car and threatened them with a weapon.

A SWAT team then held negotiations for about an hour until he surrendered.

He was then taken into custody and to the Sheriff's office. Hammond will more than likely be taken back to Miami-Dade County to face charges.
