Police: Alcohol may have been factor in crash that killed pregnant woman

Charges pending blood sample results

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – It's been two weeks since the crash that killed 26-year-old Alanna DeMella at a hotel pool cabana in Fort Lauderdale.

DeMella, who was seven months pregnant, was on vacation with her husband when a car driven by Rosa Maria Rivera, 34, crashed into the cabana where DeMella was using the restroom.

Police now say that minutes before the crash, Rivera was drinking at Mangos, a nearby restaurant and lounge.

Court records show that Rivera admitted to ordering a martini and an appetizer. Bur Rivera says she left in the middle of a heated argument with her husband, got into her car and sped away.

A tenth of a mile later, she slammed into the cabana where DeMella was using the restroom. Witnesses at the time said the car was moving well beyond the posted 25 mph speed limit.

Detectives have since collected four vials of blood from the Broward General Medical Center where Rivera was treated for her injuries.

Those pending results could lead to her arrest.

"There is probable cause to believe that Rosa Maria Rivera was under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and/or controlled substance at the time of this crash," according to court documents.

Rivera could be charged with DUI manslaughter and vehicular manslaughter, depending on how much, if any, alcohol is found in those blood samples.

Rivera told police she does not remember the impact. All she recalls is being pulled out of the car.
