Police: Miami-Dade corrections sergeant arrested after shooting husband

Sergeant shot husband in shoulder after argument, says police

MIAMI – Police say a corrections sergeant has been charged with attempted second-degree murder and aggravated battery with a weapon for shooting her husband.

Miami-Dade police say 47-year-old Angeleatha L. Chestnut, a Miami-Dade Corrections Department sergeant, and her husband became involved in a domestic argument about her husband staying out late at night.

When the argument escalated, police said Chestnut retrieved a handgun and pointed it in the direction of her husband. Chestnut fired the handgun once, striking her husband.

Chestnut's husband sustained a single gunshot wound to his left-upper shoulder. Police said he was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, where he is listed in critical but stable condition.

Chestnut was arrested Friday and taken to jail.
