Police find two boys living with dead mother

Miami-Dade police: Teen confesses to killing mother

NORTHEAST MIAMI-DADE, Fla. – Police said a teenage boy confessed to killing his mother after her decomposing body was found in a Miami-Dade apartment complex Wednesday night.

The victim was identified as 35-year-old Renette Emile.

According to police, Emile, her 16-year-old son, Kit Darrant, and her 3-year-old son lived in the Jade Winds Apartment complex on 18th Avenue and Northeast 191st Street.

Police said Emile's estranged boyfriend was suspicious after he hadn't heard from her for several days. On Wednesday night, he called police to check on Emile.

When police arrived about 10 p.m. Wednesday, they found the woman's decomposing body in a bedroom.

Darrant and the 3-year-old, who police said is the son the victim and her estranged boyfriend, arrived at the apartment shortly after police.

Police said the body had clearly been inside the home for several days, and they believe the two boys had been living in the home with the body.

Darrant and the estranged boyfriend were taken in for questioning. Miami-Dade police said Darrant confessed to killing his mother.

Miami-Dade police said Darrant will be charged.

Police said the cause of Emile's death has not been determined.

"The medical examiner is the one who is officially going to determine the amount of time the body has been deceased, but investigators have told me the decomposition process had already begun," said Alvaro Zabaleta, of the Miami-Dade Police Department.

Neighbors said they smelled a foul odor but didn't think much of it. They also said there was loud music coming from the apartment Wednesday night, asx if there was a party going on.

"It shocks the hell out of me, and I don't know what is up with this kid," said neighbor Peter Olowski. "They have to look into it to see if he has any psychological problems or unless he did it."

Police have been at the home twice this year for Darrant, once for a domestic disturbance with his mother, another time for a charge of reckless driving.

"He's been a troubled kid," said Chris Thomb, a friend of the family. "His mom tried to steer him in the right direction."

However, family friend Monique St. Pierre said the troubles were recent.

"He wasn't like that. He was a good kid. He must have gone crazy," St. Pierre said.

Neighbors said Darrant went to Dr. Michael Krop Senior High School, but that he had gotten into some sort of trouble and been suspended, and his mother wanted to send him to boot camp.

"She wanted to send him to boot camp to straighten him out," said Janet Baker, Emile's sister.

Baker has taken custody of the 3-year-old boy.
