Project expected to be done in 2014

MIAMI ā€“ The massive Port Miami tunnel has reached a new milestone.

The tunnel-boring machine is now halfway across the channel and inching further along every day. So far, it has bored through more than 2,000 feet of rock underneath the channel.

Four barges are also in place along the channel to help place reinforcing concrete pillars and grout along the tunnel path.

Once it is done, there will be two side-by-side tunnels, each more than 40 feet wide, with two lanes of traffic each.

The tunnel is expected to be finished by 2014.
