Retired deputy accused of strangling wife

Maury Hernandez arrested for domestic battery

MIAMI LAKES, Fla. ā€“ A former Broward Sheriff's Office deputy was arrested Sunday for trying to strangle his wife, according to authorities.

Local 10's cameras were rolling as a handcuffed Maury Hernandez, 33, was taken into jail. Hernandez was booked on a charge of domestic battery.

According to court records, Hernandez is accused of trying to strangle his wife, a law enforcement officer.

It's a far cry from a relatively clean career Hernandez enjoyed with the BSO until his near death in 2007 when he was shot in the head while on duty. The injury forced him into early retirement.

Hernandez invited Local 10 to documents his remarkable recovery from the head wound.

Hernandez would make headlines once again in January of 2012. According to authorities, Hernandez and his family were dining at an ice cream shop when a beggar became violent.

"At that point, I was thinking of nothing else but to defend my family and my baby," he told Local 10.

The retired deputy fired several shots and hit the man in self-defense, according to authorities. Hernandez was never charged with a crime.
