Victim in hit-and-run crash dies

Ana Mares, 52, hit near Brickell Avenue, Southwest 8th Street

MIAMI – Police are searching for the driver who hit and killed a 52-year-old woman on Friday.

Officials say 52-year-old Ana Mares (pictured, right) was walking to her car on Brickell Bay Drive near SE 8th Street when she was hit and left for dead.

"What kind of a person would do something like that to another person?" asked the victim's sister, Adriana.

A witness picked up Mares's cell phone and called a family number.

"I called my daughter and said, 'Where is tia?' And she said she just left," said Adriana. "I said someone just called us and said she has been hit. Go please and see. She ran out of the restaurant with her friends and she was laying on the ground."

The family says Mares graduated from the University of Miami and worked in finance. She was born in Argentina, but lived most of her life in South Florida.

Mares was also a breast cancer survivor.

"She was little-by-little coming back," said Adriana.

Police are looking for a dark 4-door car with a damaged passenger side mirror. Anyone with information is urged to call Miami police.
