Wife of man found dead in Deerfield Beach speaks out

Jay Haper's body washed ashore on Deerfield Beach

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – The wife of a man who was found dead in Deerfield Beach is now speaking out, saying the two were going to celebrate their 25th anniversary together.

"In a second we lost him. Someone you had the day before, the very next day is gone and without an explanation," said Karen Harper. "It is very difficult."

In the early morning hours of October 17th, Jay Harper, Karen's husband, was found floating in the Atlantic Ocean. Police said they suspect foul play.

"Something happened to him and we don't know what happened to him. We really need people," said Karen. "If anybody (has) heard anything or saw anything, help out the police. You lost your husband or you lost your dad. You know, what happened? To say 'don't know' is very unsettling for us."

Police said Jay went to the beach with a woman between midnight and 2 am. Two hours later, he was found dead.

Police said they have interviewed the woman Jay had been with, and she is not a suspect in the case.

A witness remembers seeing a suspicious man walking along the beach, and that is the best lead police said they have at the moment.

BSO released a sketch today of a man they believe may have information about the case.

Jay's family says they are trying to cope with the tragedy.

"He coached us and went to everything he could," said Nick Harper, Jay's son. "I mean, he was gone most of the time, but he was there every weekend watching the game."

Jay's daughter, Megan Harper, said the situation is a shock to her because she said she is daddy's little girl.

Police said they are still continuing to investigate this case.
