Woman dies after boat sinks off Key Largo

2nd passenger hospitalized

KEY LARGO, Fla. – A woman died and a man was hospitalized after a dive charter boat sank off Key Largo on Sunday, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

The FWC said the dive charter boat Get Wet had just left a mooring at Molasses Reef off Key Largo about 3:15 p.m. when it began taking on water.

Officials said the boat quickly sank. The captain and five passengers were able to get off the boat, but a man and a woman remained trapped in the cabin, the FWC said.

The captain dove underwater and pulled the unconscious passengers out of the sunken boat, officials said.

The FWC said a nearby vessel picked up the unconscious passengers, identified as Amit Rampurkarl, 27, of New York, and Aimee Rhoades, 36, of Washington. They were given CPR on the way to Key Largo.

The FWC said Rhoades was pronounced dead upon arriving onshore near Key Largo. Rampurkarl was airlifted to Baptist Hospital in serious condition.
