Armed bank robber shot, killed at barber shop, Miami Beach police say

Police chief says suspect walked out of barber shop with straight-edge razor

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A suspect in an armed robbery Saturday morning was shot and killed at a barber shop, Miami Beach police said.

Police received a 911 call shortly before 10:30 a.m. Saturday about a robbery at a Bank of America at 1414 Alton Road.

The caller told police the robber was armed with a bomb and passed a note to the teller. The man also threatened to shoot a customer, police said.

Officers arrived and were told the man fled north on Alton Road. The man was never given any money before leaving the bank.

Police said the suspect was seen entering the Razzle Dazzle Barber Shop on Alton Road. Police arrived and saw the man inside.

The suspect refused to exit the barber shop. Police said that's when the man emerged with a straight-edge razor in his hand.

"At some point during that confrontation, he did raise his hand with a straight-edge razor in it, and he was shot," Miami Beach Police Chief Dan Oates said.

Multiple bystanders in the street recorded the fatal shooting with their cellphones.

The Miami-Dade Police Department will investigate the shooting.

"Our investigators will use the video as part of their investigation," Miami-Dade police Detective Marjorie Eloi said.

The suspect's identity hasn't been released.
