KENDALL, Fla. - Today a South Florida girl, killed in a hit-and-run crash, will be honored in a special way.
A Kendall street is being renamed today after Ashley Valdes, on what would have been her 12th birthday.
At 4 p.m. a portion of Southwest 80 Street between 147 Avenue and 152 Avenue will be renamed Ashley Valdes Street.
Valdes was struck and killed by a pickup truck after getting off a school bus on Jan. 8. Eight days later a tip led police to arrest Harvey Abraham. He is currently out on bond awaiting trial.
Valdes' death sparked a new Miami-Dade alert system. On Jan 21 The Ashley Nicole Valdes Public Safety Alert programs was launched. The program notifies subscribers via text message of current public safety events in which community assistance is being sought. To sign up for the alerts click here .
