14 in custody after migrants come ashore in Fort Lauderdale

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Fourteen people are in custody after 20 migrants came ashore Sunday morning in Fort Lauderdale.

The migrants were located near Southeast 15th Street and Cordova Road on a 27-foot Sea Ray boat.

U.S. Coast Guard officials said of those in custody, seven are females from China, four are males from China, one is a female from Haiti, one is a male from Haiti and one is a male from Dominican Republic.

No drugs or contraband were found on the boat, but officials said the group is a known criminal organization from the Bahamas and that they are known for smuggling people and narcotics into the United States.

Officials believe there were at least 20 people on the boat, some of whom are unaccounted for.

The migrants are being interviewed by Border Patrol and other law enforcement agencies. They will be turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
