Baby back with family after teen hijacks car

Police: 13-year-old boy taken into custody, faces grand theft auto charge

MIAMI – A 13-year-old boy is in custody after a carjacking in Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood Friday afternoon.

Police said the SUV was reported stolen from 8450 Northeast Miami Court just before 4:30 p.m. Friday.

The mother of a 6-month-old boy was standing just a few feet away from her car as she took her two eldest children to their grandmother, who was also close to the vehicle, according to investigators.

Police said it appeared the baby's mother left the engine running with the vehicle's air conditioning on because of the heat as the baby was asleep in his car seat, placed in the back of the SUV.

A teen then jumped into the driver's side and took off, police said.

Within minutes, a sergeant in a marked Miami police car spotted the SUV in the area of Northeast Second Avenue and 78th Street. Police said the sergeant performed a traffic stop and demanded the driver to surrender. The driver complied and was taken into custody.

The baby, who was still asleep, awoke in the arms of the sergeant who rescued him. Police said the baby, who was not hurt, was reunited with his family.

The 13-year-old boy was arrested on one count of grand theft auto. He was taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.
