Banco Santander has new chairwoman

Powerful patriarch dies, daughter becomes first woman to lead banking dynasty

MIAMI – Banco Santander has a new a leader. And even before she got the job Wednesday, she was already in the Forbes list of most powerful women in the world.

The news at the Spanish bank's Brickell location was that Ana Patricia Botin, 53, was taking over as the new chairwoman of the Santander Group. Her father, Emilio Botin, who was part of the third generation of Botins leading the bank, died of a heart attack Tuesday night.  He was 79.

As the billionaire's eldest daughter, the mother of three was the chief executive of Santander in the United Kingdom and has held leadership positions in Latin America. The financial institution's operation out of Miami, 1401 Brickell Ave., remains highly influential across Latin America.
