Beachgoers show appreciation for troops, veterans on Memorial Day

Von D. Mizell and Eula Johnson State Park filled to capacity Monday

DANIA BEACH, Fla. ā€“ South Florida beachgoers flocked to the sand Monday to take advantage of the long holiday weekend.

Von D. Mizell and Eula Johnson State Park, formally John U. Lloyd State Park, in Dania Beach was full to capacity with families and friends having fun in the water, catching a tan and grilling out -- exactly how you'd expect a sunny, holiday afternoon in South Florida to go.

Despite the fun in the sun, beachgoers didn't hesitate to include that while having fun, their thoughts and their appreciation is with our troops.

From the kids to the adults, they took a moment to recognize the true meaning of Memorial Day.

"Well, my brother is in the Navy and I want to support him because everybody in the war helped us," Adonar Johnson said.

"Enjoy, because we are the ones that allowed it," U.S. Army veteran James Davis said. "If it wasn't for us you probably wouldn't be here enjoying it, so enjoy it on our behalf."

Meanwhile, lifeguards and the Broward Sheriff's Beach Patrol were flying the green flag Monday, which means that conditions on the water are calm.

Lifeguards said there have been very few rescues and no drownings. They said the high tide is helping with that.

Authorities said their biggest issue Monday was dealing with some arguments and fights over parking spots.
