Beehive found at MIA yields 25 lbs of honey

Construction contractors find some 40k bees underneath shipping container

MIAMI – A construction contractor at Miami International Airport discovered a 40-pound beehive last month that yielded 25 pounds of honey.

Employees with Parsons-Odebrecht Joint Venture found the beehive -- with some 40,000 bees -- underneath a large, metal shipping container.

Instead of exterminating the hive, the construction employees contacted the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, which found a professional beekeeper to relocate the hive. Two days later, it was moved to a farm in southern Miami-Dade County.

"I applaud the team at POJV and our Wildlife Control employees for being sensitive to our natural environment and giving these bees a new lease on life at one of our local farms," said Miami-Dade Aviation Director Emilio González. "Their efforts took a potentially dangerous situation and turned it into a decidedly positive one for the airport and the environment."
