Bicyclists struck by car in Homestead

Woman dead, man hospitalized after mishap

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – A couple on a bicycle ride were rushed to the hospital Saturday morning after they were struck by a car.

Miami-Dade police and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel were called to the wreck about 8 a.m. near Southwest 162nd Avenue and Southwest 250th Street in Homestead.

It's there that a green Volkswagen Beetle struck the pair of bicyclists. The Volkswagen had heavy front-end damage and the broken bicycles were left in the grass.

The couple were airlifted to Jackson South Hospital, but the woman did not survive. The man remained in the hospital Saturday night.

The driver stayed at the scene to speak with traffic homicide detectives, though it's unclear if she will face any citations or charges as a result of the crash.
