BSO deputy collapses outside county jail

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Crews rushed to the Broward County Jail on Friday after a Broward Sheriff's Office deputy collapsed outside the facility.

According to BSO, someone arrived at the jail at 555 Southeast 1st Avenue in Fort Lauderdale to retrieve his belongs and had a knife. Jail personnel told the man to return to his car to put away the knife.

While the man was in the parking lot, the deputy had a medical episode and collapsed. BSO will not say if the deputy was escorting or following the man outside the jail, or if he was already in the parking lot.

Fort Lauderdale police later said that one person was taken into custody and turned over to BSO. It's unclear whether that person will face charges for anything.

A nurse who worked on the deputy who collapsed told Local 10 that he did not have a pulse before being transported to the hospital under police escort.

She said she called her surgeon and an ambulance arrived within three minutes.

Authorities confirmed that the deputy is in stable condition at the hospital.

No other details were immediately released.
