BSO: Hit-and-run driver kills bicyclist in Southwest Ranches

Police say man in 40s hit 4 vehicles, killed cyclist on bike path

SOUTHWEST RANCHES, Fla. – A man in his 40s led Davie police and Broward Sheriff's Office deputies on a chase Saturday afternoon, which left one person dead, according to officials.

Davie police said the first hit-and-run incident occurred at 15913 Stone Tower Street in Davie. Police said the man hit a homeowner's unoccupied parked car.

The homeowner at the address told Local 10's Christina Vazquez they were having a garage sale Saturday. The homeowner said the parked car the man hit belonged to people who had stopped to buy items at the sale.

The woman who owned the car tried to stop the man as she noticed he was about to leave. As the husband approached the man, the homeowner said the driver started revving his engine, "looking like he was about to run the woman over."

The homeowner said the man never said a word, looked straight the entire time and had a "weird and strange" look.

According to the homeowner, the man drove a red car with a small dog inside the vehicle. The homeowner said they took down the man's license plate before he took off, and called police.

After this incident, Davie police said they saw the man's vehicle at the intersection of Stirling Road and Dykes Road. An officer pulled around and parked behind the man's car. Once the man saw the officer walking up to his vehicle, police said the man took off north on Hawkes Bluff Avenue.

Police said the second hit-and-run incident occurred at 5041 Hawkes Bluff Avenue in Davie. When the officer arrived at this scene, the officer saw the man backing up out of the driveway and took off again.

The man headed north on Hawkes Bluff, in which police said an officer activated their overhead lights and tried to initiate a traffic stop. Officials said the man then drove east on Griffin Road.

As police went over I-75, officials said the man was "well ahead" of the officer. An eyewitness said they saw the patrol cars driving "very fast." Officers said police stopped pursuing at the intersection of I-75 and Griffin.

The third incident occurred just east of 14640 Griffin Road in Southwest Ranches. According to BSO PIO, the man was weaving around a car when it swerved into a bike path, hitting and killing a cyclist.

Finally, according to BSO PIO, the man traveled eastbound, then crossed into the westbound lanes, traveling against traffic. Police said he sideswiped three cars and then slammed into a fourth car head-on at the intersection of Hancock and Griffin in Southwest Ranches.

Police described the man as a white male in his 40s. They report that no one in the cars on Griffin Road were seriously hurt.
