Burned Teen's Parents Hire Attorney

Suspects In Fiery Attack Appear in Court

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – Michael Brewer's parents have hired their own attorney as the case proceeds against the teens accused of setting him on fire last year.

The 15-year-old suffered severe burns to 65 percent of his body last October after he was attacked by several other teens at a Deerfield Beach apartment complex, police said.

Jesus Mendez, 16, and 15-year-olds Denver Jarvis and Matthew Bent are charged as adults with second-degree attempted murder in the attack. The three suspects pleaded not guilty in November.

Brewer's mother and father appeared in a Fort Lauderdale courtroom on Tuesday as their newly hired lawyer requested that the State Attorney's Office hand over all of the information on the case.

The teens charged with attacking Brewer were also in court.
