Call Christina investigation sparks security changes to Miami-Dade cemetery

13 vehicle burglaries reported at Graceland Memorial Park South in 6-month span

MIAMI – A Call Christina investigation into car break-ins at a Miami-Dade County cemetery has prompted security changes.

A mother contacted Local 10 News investigative reporter Christina Vazquez in June after she said thieves stole her purse from Graceland Memorial Park South just days after she buried her daughter.

After taking Juanita Leal's call, Vazquez uncovered that police had responded to the site for 13 incidents involving "theft from a motor vehicle' in a six-month time span.

Graceland told Local 10 News that it planned to step up security and it has fulfilled that commitment.

Crews have installed an all-new security system following  Leal's burglary incident.

In a statement, Yvette McPhillips, general manager of Graceland Memorial Park, told Local 10 News: "In response to the Juanita Leal burglary incident, Graceland Memorial Park has completed a thorough re-evaluation of its current safety measures and made a dedicated effort to make any necessary improvements, which included the installation of various security cameras throughout the property as well as continued engagement of periodic security patrols. The safety of our client families is of the utmost importance to us, and we can assure visiting families that the proper security systems are in place to discourage this type of incident from occurring again. For the privacy and respect of our client families who visit for quiet contemplation with their loved ones, we prohibit any on-site filming."
