Teen crashes car into Miami Gardens house

Woman, special-needs daughter inside house at time

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – A 14-year-old boy took his mother's car on a joyride when he lost control and crashed into a Miami Gardens house Tuesday, witnesses and neighbors told Local 10 News.

The crash occurred at 20938 NW 39th Ave.

Witnesses and neighbors said the boy was speeding through the neighborhood in his mother's Nissan Maxima when he lost control, drove through a fence and crashed through the house.

"It sounded like a bomb went off," neighbor Eloise Nelson said.

Dorothy Gibson and her special-needs daughter were inside watching television when the car slammed into the living room.

Cellphone video showed neighbors pulling the teen out of the car before Miami-Dade Fire Rescue paramedics arrived. The boy was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

Gibson's 21-year-old daughter was injured by debris from the crash. Cyril Gibson said his niece received stitches.

"It could have been worse," Cyril Gibson said. "I just thank God that she made it out OK."

The home, which was deemed unsafe, has yet to be boarded up, so the family was left with no option but to spend the night guarding it.

Family members of the teen driver said he's recovering, but they didn't want to talk about what happened. It's unclear what charges, if any, he'll face.
