Cars burned in Miami to detect auto insurance fraud

Miami, Hialeah rank as top city's in auto insurance fraud

MIAMI ā€“ Infinity Auto Insurance and the Miami-Dade Fire Department have come together for an interesting activity in the hot afternoon sun.

"We've decided to burn a couple of vehicles to teach the investigators how to detect this fraud," said Carlos Torres of Infinity Auto Insurance. "The fraud in Florida is very high. Usually people have a financial motive or don't like their car anymore, so they'll set them on fire to make them a total loss."

Of the five top cities in the nation in auto insurance fraud, four of them are in Florida, and two of those are Miami and Hialeah. The other Florida cities are Orlando and Tampa.

Tuesday's fire display was done in a controlled setting and nobody was hurt.
