Cash lanes close at NW 17th Avenue toll plaza on Dolphin Expressway

The Miami-Dade Expressway Authority says this is to eliminate the "stop and go" created by cash lanes

MIAMI – Beginning Sunday, there will be no more cash lanes at the Northwest 17th Avenue toll plaza on the Dolphin Expressway.

Drivers who pass through that 836 toll plaza will now pay electronically. The Miami-Dade Expressway Authority says this is to eliminate the "stop and go" created by cash lanes.

The tolls at Northwest 17th Avenue will stay at the current $1.00 rate for Sunpass users, but the cost will be $2.00 for toll-by-plate users. MDX says the toll-by-plate rate is higher because taking a picture of a car's plate and sending a bill for the toll takes longer to process, compared to Sunpass.

The eventual removal of all toll booths on the 836 is part of a larger construction project to improve signage on the roadway and repave the road.

Construction will go through next summer.
